In college, I weighed 140 pounds and had 3 percent body fat. I was a mid-distance runner; my main focus was the mile. I also ran cross country in the fall, where the distance was much longer. To keep up with my competitors, it was nothing for me to run 80 to 90 miles a week.
Fast forward seven years. I graduated in 2005 and now that it is 2011, I weigh 200 pounds. I have missed running competitively for years, but have had a lot of trouble finding the motivation to stay in shape. Without a team atmosphere, it was just too easy to let myself get out of shape.
Honestly, I am sick of it. I want to be an athlete again. I know that 3 percent body fat is not healthy, and I don’t want that again. I want to be able to run fast again though. I want to be happy with myself and being overweight is definitely not conducive to this. I read a quote somewhere that if you want to change your life, you need to start with your fitness. This makes everything more manageable, the argument went. If you are happy with your fitness, everything else falls into place more easily. I don’t know if this is one hundred percent correct, but it makes sense. It is easier to achieve your goals if you are not worried about your self-image. Accomplishing fitness is a great start; if you can achieve this, you can achieve other life goals.
I have started running a few times a week. This hasn’t worked for me in the past because I would always get discouraged that I was not as fast as I once was. What makes this time different? I don’t focus on running for speed any more. I don’t time my runs, I only run as a way to improve my endurance, but it is not the primary focus of my workouts. I use the punching bag as the main part of my workout, something I have never done in the past. It’s a simple trick I play on myself, but it works. I am not frustrated with my fitness because I am learning and improving every day.
